COURSE MEAL (CRISPY PEKING DUCK)

BY LEON TRUONG

“Peking duck is great, a celebration shared with family and friends over an air blown, roasted, succulent duck.

Mmmm.

Anyways, I feel like white people have slowly co-opted the discussion around ethnic food. Whether to prove their locality, show off their knowledge (the mind is hot) or to justify their fetishes.

I'm quite impressed with how seamlessly they can integrate ethnic food into their art aesthetic (shoutout to Kewpie art). Even more impressed with the nuance with which they're allowed to discuss, to debate, or to love it. Whereas I feel like I'm restricted to telling a story that's only just palatable enough for white taste buds. Like that one sad anecdote about school lunch trauma (white bread envy).

So as much as I love that white people appreciate the food or the culture.. it would mean so much to me if they just told me they were like.. jealous.”
