“A quick Google search brings up some hilariously scathing reviews of Ling Nan, and I think that makes me love it even more. The brash service, the glaring flourescent lights and the throw-away butcher’s paper used as table cloths are all part of its charm. These colourful traits are common practice where I grew up, both in Springvale and to a degree, at home (sorry Mom). What really matters at the end of the day is, of course, the food.
The XO Pipis here are iconic to the Chinatown experience. It’s the perfect balance of sweet, spicy and salty. People in the know will order it with the Chinese doughnut to soak up all of the leftover XO sauce (liquid gold), so make sure you link up this combo meal. Melbourne’s food scene changes as quickly and as unexpectedly as the weather, which is why I’m glad I can always come back to Ling Nan and feel right at home.”
